Day and Overnight Tripsluggage

 

The OLLI Trips Committee plans and coordinates trips of educational interest to OLLI members to locations off the CSUF campus. These trips are OLLI special events and are subject to the Special Events Registration Policy (see link below). Trips are of two types: day trips and overnight trips. Some recent or planned day trips include the Hollywood Bowl, JPL and LAX. Some recent or planned overnight trips include Death Valley, Monterey, and Costa Rica. Members are notified of upcoming trips via the ChroniCLE, the OLLI email newsletters and the OLLI bulletin board. If members have ideas for future trips, bring them to the Trips Committee meetings .

Prado DamWhere Does Our Water Come From? An OLLI Field Investigation

Join us for an engaging field trip that dives into the Santa Ana River, often referred to as the worst flood hazard west of the Mississippi, yet it serves as the primary water source for Orange County. Prado Dam: We will kick off our tour at the recently expanded Prado Dam, which plays a critical role in flood control along the Santa Ana River, followed by a visit to the constructed wetlands behind the dam. Groundwater Recharge Basins: Next, we will explore the Groundwater Recharge Basins and the Inflatable Rubber Dam in Anaheim, which are essential for replenishing our underground aquiferour main source of water supply. Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS): We will conclude our journey with a tour of the GWRS in Fountain Valley. This collaborative project between the Orange County Water District and Orange County Sanitation District is a national leader and internationally recognized for its’ innovative
approach to recycling sewage water into drinking water.

During the trip, we will learn about :

  • Dams and wetlands
  • Endangered species
  • Groundwater recharge
  • Seawater intrusion barriers
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Ocean outfalls
  • Water quality testing
  • Pollution monitoring

We will also discuss the impacts of this year’s unexpected prolonged rainy season. Remember, water is a precious resource, and we should never take it for granted.

LAX Airfield Tour & Flight Path Museum Visit

Planes at LAX

Join us as we visit one of the busiest airports in the world - Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) - for a behind-the-scenes airfi eld tour. See LAX Historic Hangar 1, ongoing construction projects, various aircraft like the A380 and Dreamliner, cargo, and corporate jet operations. We also will visit the Flight Path Learning Center & Museum, which features exhibits from the golden age of flight in Los Angeles to the recent history of the Southern California aerospace industry. The museum also features one of the largest collections of aviation memorabilia from the past through today.

We will head to The Proud Bird Food hall after the airfield and museum tour for lunch on your own where a multitude of dining options are available with incredible views of planes landing at the airport.

OLLI Los Angeles Getty Museum TourGetty Museum

Spend a day at the famed Getty Museum.  This is your opportunity to enjoy the huge seventeenth century Louis XIV tapestries and Van Gogh’s painting “IRISES” (originally purple, but faded to blue) as well as the beautiful gardens with breathtaking views of Los Angeles.  Lunch is available at the Café, the Terrace Café, and the Restaurant (reservations) or bring your lunch using tables outside of the Terrace Café.
