Bird Watching with the Audubon Society
San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, Irvine

Bird Watching

Orange County’s Sea and Sage Audubon Society (a chapter of the national Audubon Society) will be our host for this slow-paced outing. We will be guided along the edges of protected wetland ponds on a 1½ hour leisurely walk of about 0.8 miles. The walking surface is flat, and there will be lots of stops to look at the birds. Our guides will be expert birders from Sea and Sage. Sea and Sage also will provide us with binoculars.

We are likely to see sandpipers and other shorebirds, ducks (dabblers and divers), gulls, terns, pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons, ibises and swallows at the wetlands, as well as woodland and grassland birds, like warblers, hummingbirds, finches, phoebes and roadrunners in the wooded and grassy areas surrounding the ponds.

There are some benches for resting along our route, but feel free to bring folding stools or canes with stools if standing for any period of time is difficult for you.

After our walk, we will eat a picnic lunch at the picnic tables in another area of the Sea and Sage property. You may bring your own lunch, or the Corner Bakery can provide a box lunch consisting of a sandwich, fruit cup, chips and cookie. Sandwich choices are turkey and Swiss OR chicken pesto OR tuna OR vegan. Please specify your choice on the payment coupon.

Japanese American National Museum Tour - Little Tokyo, Los AngelesJapanese American Museum Tour Founded in 1992, the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. As part of the Smithsonian Affiliations Program, JANM covers more than 130 years of Japanese American history. Exhibits share stories and artifacts of the Issei, Nisei, and Sansei generations of Japanese in the United States. Although books and movies tell the story of the Japanese Americans who were unjustly uprooted to relocation centers during World War II, the museum captures the impact on the Japanese culture, community, and future generations of Japanese Americans.
