Embracing Inclusion Special Lecture

Thursday, January 22  • 10:30 a.m. - Noon • Mackey Auditorium In Person Only  (No Recording)

Embracing Inclusion resurrects one of the earliest efforts in the United States to develop a diverse movement for expanding the embrace of difference. It shows how certain students of Protestant, Jewish and Catholic backgrounds, immigrant and native born alike, worked together to demonstrate what they understood as common American values. Their example is of particular interest today, a time of division, strife and exclusion. This lecture tells the almost forgotten story of The University Religious Conference (URC), a multifaith extra-curricular student organization at UCLA, the first such student organization to attempt expanding this circle of American inclusion, which began in 1928 and continued as a vital student movement until the 1970s.
