Urban Walks and Hikes (New)

Alternate Tuesdays • 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. • OLLI Courtyard

February 10, 24 • March 10, 24 • April 14, 28 • May 12

Pre-registration Required (see below).

Each hike will be in the range spanned by these levels:
Easy – about 3 miles and a maximum of 200 feet of elevation gain
Moderate – 3 to 4 miles and up to 600 feet of elevation gain
Ambitious – 4+ miles and greater than 600 feet of elevation gain

For most hikes, we expect to walk at roughly 2 mph. If you don’t know if this pace is comfortable for you, map out a 2 mile walk near your house using Google Maps or your car’s odometer. See if you can walk it in one hour. If you do not wish to hike at this speed, you should limit yourself to the OLLI hikes that advertise a “Slower Pace”.

Where to find details:

Details on the hike distance and elevation gain, indoor restroom availability and other useful information will be available two weeks before each hike on Touchnet.

Trailhead directions and parking information will be provided in person at 9:00 am Tuesday morning of the hike in the OLLI Courtyard near Shapiro.

Advanced registration required:

All participants must sign in on Touchnet by noon the Monday before the hike (no exceptions). Each hike will have a maximum number of participants (OLLI members only—no spouses, guests or pets.) There will be a waitlist.

Day of the hike:

Registered hike participants gather at 9:00 am Tuesday morning in the OLLI Courtyard near Shapiro, check in, and receive a trailhead map. If not all of the registered participants are present, waitlist participants will be accepted.

Participants arrange their own carpooling.

A cancellation of the hike (for example, due to unsuitable weather), will be announced on OLLI Today’s Calendar. Also, Steve will be in the courtyard at 9:00 am to notify anyone who missed the message.

At the trailhead, everyone signs in on the hike roster.

At the end of the trip, everyone signs out on the hike roster.

Volunteer Trail Sweep:

For some hikes, one or more assistant leaders will be available to serve as trail sweep (last person in line). If no assistant leader is available, Steve will ask for trail sweep volunteers (half-hour of service) before the start of the hike. The hike will proceed when a sufficient number of trail sweep volunteers have been identified.

Lunch Afterward:

Hike participants may wish to further their acquaintance over (an optional) lunch after the hike.
