An Insider’s View of an Oft-Misunderstood Segment of Society

This course is based on Dr. Pauline Merry’s memoir which shares her insights of growing up in segregated St Louis from the ages of 5 to 17. The memoir will serve as the starting point for class discussion including the social and historical perspective from her point of view and how Dr. Merry surmounted racism and ignorance with grace and grit. Class topics: January 24 - Introducing the Black Middle Class; February 7 - The Ville in St. Louis MO, home to working- and middle-class blacks of the ‘40s and ‘50s. including an introduction to growing up during this period in Ville, St. Louis; February 21 - The memoir continues with five stories or a little black girl growing up in the very segregated St. Louis, Missouri.
