This semester we will begin by studying the great tragedy King Lear. In this play, Shakespeare explores in depth, filial ingratitude as injustice presses inexorably upon the fallen Lear. Even indifferent nature seems to deepen the travails of the king. After the vicissitudes of King Lear, we will move on to the humorous escapades of Two Gentlemen from Verona. Here two men and two women find it hard to pair up happily while a dog often steals the scene. Inexpensive copies of the plays will be available at class time. Come join us as we read and discuss the works of the world's greatest playwright.
