Lost Music from the Holocaust: (Repeat Program Request)
September 22
Looking back at the significant events of the first half of the 20th Century, one would be likely to include two world wars, the great depression and the Holocaust. The music included in this program was composed during the Holocaust at the Theresienstadt (or Terezin, its Czech name) concentration camp north of Prague. It was here that Hitler sent the Jewish intellectuals, artists and musicians. Terezin has become synonymous with the greatest propaganda lie of the Nazis' reign of terror. Of the 140,000 sent to Terezin only 17,000 were documented as surviving at the end of the war. The Terezin Chamber Music Foundation is credited with locating, documenting and releasing this music which was first performed publicly at the Forum on the Holocaust in Stockholm in the year 2000.
