Piano/Keyboard Chord Theory
October 8
Participants: Marvin Marsh, Carl Hurty
Have you ever thought about how musicians can join in an impromptu jam session and everyone seems to know where they fit? The answer lies in the knowledge of chord structures and the progression of chords that support a melody line. This class will explain how chords are constructed and how they sound. For example, we’ll show what a C MAJ, or an F MI or a G7 chord is and how it is made. Marvin Marsh will explain chord progressions and how one anticipates the next chord or a series of chords. The lecture/demonstration will introduce the circle of fifths with piano and slides, and then he and vocalist Carl Hurty will demonstrate by playing and singing several standard jazz classics. The presentation will be fun for all, but a benefit to those who want to dig beneath the surface of music sight-reading and expand their improvisational capability.

What Is Jihad?
December 10
Speaker: James Santucci, Ph.D., Professor and Chair Department of Comparative Religion, CSUF
Jihad (translated as "Struggle" or described as "Holy War") has a controversial role in Islam. The purpose of the lecture is to examine its perception in the Islamic world: whether it primarily refers to an inner spiritual struggle of the individual or to an outer struggle against opposing and offensive communities; the role of the mujahedin or "holy warriors"; the association of the martyr with jihad; and the question of suicide. Discussion will also cover the position of jihad in the Qur'an and the Hadith.
