CM054: Using the Best of iPhoto 6 and Picasa 3 to Touch-up Your Photos
iPhoto is part of Apple’s iLife suite. It comes installed on all new Macs; if you want to upgrade, you must purchase the newer iLife suite. The OLLI Mac lab has 6 student Macs with iPhoto 6 (iLife 08) installed.

Picasa is free software from Google. It runs only on the newer Intel Macs. Picasa, like iPhoto, offers powerful photo organizing and editing tools. Also, like iPhoto, Picasa offers all you need to produce professional looking slide shows and movies that can be shared with friends and family through the Internet or on CDs and DVDs. The OLLI Mac lab has 2 student Intel Macs with Picasa 3 installed.

While both programs can be used to accomplish very similar results, they each have tools lacking in the other and do some task differently**. In this class you will learn the differences between the two programs relative to photo touch-up and how to use each. You may find that you will want to have both programs installed on your home Mac, preferring to use one program over the other for specific photo touch-up tasks.

(**For one of the biggest differences between the two programs, not covered in this class, see the Session 2 class: CM058: Another Way to Easily Organize and Sort Your Photos the Picasa Way)

CM058: Another Way to Easily Organize and Sort Your Photos the Picasa Way
Picasa is free software from Google. It’s very good, but it runs only on the newer Intel Macs. The OLLI Mac lab has 2 student Intel Macs with Picasa 3 installed.

Picasa, like iPhoto, offers powerful photo organizing and editing tools. But unlike iPhoto, Picasa does not store your photos inside its program in its own custom library as iPhoto does. Rather, Picasa contains a powerful database program that will catalog and track all or selected groups of graphics on your computer, even the photos in your iPhoto library. For some, Picasa’s method is a major advantage. But you can have both. Picasa works in parallel with iPhoto and does not affect iPhoto’s operation in any way.

In this class, you will learn how Picasa does its cataloging and how you can use Picasa to organize and sort your photos the Picasa way. With only 2 student Intel Macs in the lab, a lot of the class will be demo with the student sharing the 2 Intel Macs on a rotating basis for exercises.
